In addition to access to downloadable e-books and audiobooks through our subscription to OverDrive, Bacon Library now offers a Kindle and a Nook available for checkout to patrons!!

Our goal in offering this service is to allow you an e-reader experience so you can make informed decisions should you decide to purchase one.

A few titles are pre-loaded onto each reader. Additional titles may be downloaded using Overdrive’s Destination Download with your library card. The cardholder must be a resident of a city that subscribes to Overdrive (current participating Downriver libraries: Wyandotte, Trenton, Taylor and Allen Park). E-readers may be checked out for free to adult patrons with cards in good standing and circulate for 3 weeks. Access to a personal computer may be required to download e-books; certain free software may be necessary to complete the download process.

Lego Contest

Build a creative, fantastic Lego construction at Bacon Library and enter it into our 8th Annual Lego Contest

Rules:

1. Come to the library on Saturday, March 10th between 2:00pm and 4:00pm. Using our incredibly huge stash of Legos you can design and build your creation. Then you’ll be able to enter the contest and begin earning votes right away!

2. There will be three age categories: 7 and under and 8 through 11 and 12 and up. Constructions made by a group will be placed in the age group of the oldest participant.

3. Entries will be displayed at the library through Saturday, March 17

4. Be sure to come in and vote! Bring family and friends to vote for their favorite, too!

5. Winners will be announced Monday afternoon, March 19th. There is no need to be present.

One prize will be awarded to the builder in each age category whose creation receives the most votes from library patrons. All participants receive a ribbon and certificate.

Lighthouses on the lower Detroit River

This is a photograph of the Mariners Memorial Lighthouse in Belanger Park in River Rouge. It is the only active land-based lighthouse on our "Downriver" stretch of the Detroit River.

There are numerous buoys as well as the Livingstone Channel upper light in the river.

The Detroit Light in Lake Erie is a working light, but not in the Detroit River.

On land, the Grosse Ile light has been renovated and, is on occasion, open for tours, but it is no longer an active navigational aid. The light on the southern tip of Boblo Island is a ruin.

Three other working lighthouses that were operating in the early 20th century no longer exist. They are: Ecorse lighthouse, Grassy Island lighthouse and Mama Juda lighthouse.

For almost two centuries lights have aided navigation along the river, and to some extent, still do.

Wyandotte's Bridge to Nowhere

Five viaducts span Eureka Road near Roosevelt High School. Four of them support busy mainline railroad tracks, but the trackless westernmost of the five seems to serve no purpose. Although pedestrians sometimes use it to cross Eureka, essentially, it is a bridge to nowhere.

It was not always so. In 1902, when the automobile was only a curiosity, an electric railway named the Detroit, Monroe & Toledo Short Line Railway ran along what we now call Electric Avenue in Wyandotte. It stretched from Detroit to Toledo. Interurban streetcars clacked along the route and its tracks ran across the bridge to avoid traffic on Eureka Road.

The increasing popularity of the automobile and buses finally lead to the end of the trolley line in 1932.

Donations of all types of clean and new items are being collected during library hours. A box will be available for drop off, then we will distribute to our local shelters.

Downriver Community Food Pantry
Donate non-perishable food items inside the entrance of the library off of Vinewood. Downriver Food Pantry is located at 140 Superior Blvd inside Doherty Hall in Wyandotte, 734-281-6733. They distribute food on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am-1pm.

Pumpkin Contest

Bacon Library's Pumpkin Decorating Contest

· All families are welcome to participate. You may enter one pumpkin per person or one pumpkin as a family.

· Pumpkins must be whole and may not be cut into or scooped out.

· You may paint or draw on your pumpkin. You may also glue objects, paper, and materials of any kind.

· Pumpkins may be brought in any time between October 17th and October 24th. (They will be on display through the end of October.)

· Voting will take place October 27th through closing on Halloween.

In 2010, the Bacon Library added another fascinating resource to its extensive local history collection, a book titled Ladies of the Lights: Michigan Women in the U. S. Lighthouse Service, by Patricia Majher and published by the University of Michigan Press. The author is currently the editor of Michigan History, our state’s official history magazine.

Majher’s work gives us a personal look at the life of these women in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Keepers from our own Detroit River lights Mamajuda, Grassy Island, Ecorse and Gibraltar are included in this study.

We are pleased to announce that Patricia Majher will be presenting a program on these lady lighthouse keepers at the library on Saturday, October 8 at 2 p m. This is a free program and no registration is necessary.

There will be a book signing after the presentation. Those interested in Great Lakes lighthouses and the Detroit River history might consider owning their own autographed copy.

New Harvest: Eating Healthy for You and Your Family

In honor of Labor Day, Bacon Library will be closed Saturday, September 3 and Monday, September 5.

This year is the 129th American Labor Day. It was started by Peter J. McGuire, co-founder of The American Federation of Labor in 1882 after he witnessed a similar labor festival in Canada. President Grover Cleveland declared it a federal holiday in 1894.

Labor Day has come to mean a day of relaxation and celebration. So enjoy that last summer BBQ and your last opportunity to wear white! See you Tuesday, September 6!

Bacon Library has expanded its services with audiobooks, eBooks, and music, available to download from the library’s website. Wyandotte residents with valid library cards can check out and download digital media anytime, anywhere by visiting http://tln.lib.overdrive.com.

Users may browse the library’s website, check out with a valid library card, and download to PC, Mac®, and many mobile devices. Users will need to install free software. For audiobooks, music, and video: OverDrive® Media Console™. To read eBooks, users will need Adobe® Digital Editions. War, Home Delivered

The momentous, screaming headlines of the global war were tossed like grenades by twelve year-old paperboys onto the trim lawns and front porches of small town America.

The news packed into those papers had an explosive impact on the occupants of those homes, for nearly all had a family member fighting in the fray.

Through the month of August, the Bacon Library display cases holds original copies of local newspapers reporting the great events of World War II in bold headlines.

This presentation gives the viewer a visceral experience that recaptures some of the feeling of how it was. From the collection of Gary Ciaccio.

Art Fair at 50

This year’s Wyandotte Street Art Fair is the 50th.

In 1962, six artists gathered on First Street in downtown Wyandotte to show their artwork. Only a handful of people stopped to take a look. From this humble beginning, the Wyandotte Street Art Fair eventually grew to attract 400 artists and 150,000 fairgoers.

Gloria Dunn, one of the original founders, authored a book about its beginning titled Wyandotte Art Fair History: The Fair That Wouldn’t Stop Growing. The Bacon Library has this book for sale for $10.00. The book will also be available at the Fair, just look for the Wyandotte Historical Society table near City Hall.

Summer reading is for adults too!

In addition to all the wonderful programs we are having this summer for children and teens at Bacon Library, we are also having three programs in July for adults. Join us this Saturday July 9th at 2:30 for the first one: scrapbooking. Just bring some of your vacation photos with you and we will provide the rest of the supplies. We will be making a stand alone scrapbooking piece that you will be able to display in your home! It's a great program for beginners but all skill levels are welcome to attend.

Teen Recipes

These were the rcipes prepared at our Teen Program Food Around The World.

Cucumber Salad with Sour Cream
1 cucumber peeled and thinly sliced
salt
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 taablespoon superfine sugar (optional)
4 tablespoons sour cream

Sprinkle the cucumber with plenty of salt and leave to drain in a colander for at least 1/2 hour until it softens and loses it's juices. Then rinse in cold water and drain. Mix the vinegar with the sugar and sour cream and pour over the cucumber slices. Mix well.

Apple Slaw
½ cup whipping cream
½ cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon sugar
1 large apple
4 cups cabbage -- shredded
In a large bowl combine cream, mayo, and sugar. Core apple, dice but do not peel. Add diced apple and cabbage to mayo mixture. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

French Onion Dip
2 cups sour cream
1 package dry onion soup mix
Mix well and serve!

Hummus without Tahini
1 can garbanzo beans/chickpeas
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon cumin
In a food processor, blend all ingredients together until smooth and creamy.
Serve immediately with pita bread3, pita chips, or veggies. Store in a airtight container for up to three days.

Easy Salsa
2 Tomatoes
1/2 Vidalia Onion
Cilantro to taste
Using a chopper or food processor, blend all together! The kids added a teaspoon of sugar.

Read and Relax in Michigan State Parks; Park & Read Program Offers Free Park Passes for Michigan Readers

Spend a lazy day with a good book in the great outdoors compliments of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Library of Michigan.
Back for a third summer, the DNR and the Library of Michigan are offering their Park & Read program at more than 400 participating libraries across the state.
While checking out a book, Park & Read allows library cardholders to "check-out" a one-day pass that waives the Recreation Passport entry fee into any Michigan state park or recreation area. This $10 savings also provides a one-time, free access to more than 500 events taking place in state parks throughout the summer, and to make the day even more relaxing, some of the state parks are offering the loan of a hammock.
The Grand Rapids Public Library has been a part of the Park & Read program since its inception in 2009. Marketing and Communications Manager Kristen Krueger-Corrado says the library saw participation jump by 10 percent last year.
"Many of our patrons are struggling to find work and making do with less. The Park & Read program allows them to have an inexpensive way to enjoy Michigan's natural beauty, spend time with family and friends, and exercise their mind and body," Krueger-Corrado said. "Many of our patrons expressed their excitement at being able to check out a Park & Read pass - it was the only way they were able to afford to take their family to the beach that summer. And who doesn't love a day at the beach?"
Passes are valid for seven days from checkout and can be used for one day at any one of Michigan's 98 state parks. Passes are valid for day use only. The program runs through Oct. 1, 2011.

The Recreation Passport has replaced motor vehicle permits for entry into Michigan state parks, recreation areas and state-administered boating access fee sites. Michigan residents can purchase the Recreation Passport ($10 for motor vehicles; $5 for motorcycles) by checking "YES" on their license plate renewal forms, or at any state park or recreation area. Children and Teen Section Makeover

YOUTH

When you walk into the children's section this summer, you will see lots of changes. The Juvenile Non-fiction section now contains juvenile biographies and @ 2 sets of World Book Encyclopedias.

Juvenile Fiction has moved up in the world! It is now on higher shelving and contains Juvenile Graphics, Newbery Collection, Juvenile Mystery, Juvenile Science Fiction, Juvenile Books on Cd, and regular Juvenile Fiction.

In between Juvenile Fiction and Picture books are the JReaders. This section will be growing, so look for new titles to come! Our Counting, Color, Alphabet, Caldecott and Holiday books are also here.

Along the wall in the back are the DVD's and Videos. We still have a few more movements to come, but we are very happy with the layout now!

TEEN

The teen section is being split into Teen Fiction and High school Fiction. Teen Fiction will contain books aimed at middle school. These will stay shelved where they are now.

High School fiction will contain fiction aimed at kids in grades 9-12. Right now they will be shelved in the aisle by the youth section, but they will be moving over to where Large print is currently housed.

We hope that all these changes make the library a browser friendly place! We know that change is hard and that it will take time to get used to where things are. Don't be afraid to ask! Thank you for patience.

Staff Recommendation

For the June 1st meeting of the Bacon Book Club we read and discussed The Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff. It was my favorite book of the five that we have read so far this year and many people in the book club greatly enjoyed it as well.

Willie Upton returns home to the city where she grew up, Templeton, New York, after an affair with one of her college professers goes awry. While staying at her childhood home with her single mother, who had claimed in the past not to know who Willie's real father is, her mother reveals that she does in fact know who it is and that it is someone from town. Rather than just telling Willie who it is though, her mother wants to make her work for it and gives Willie a project that will occupy her time while she is at home. The only clue that Willie is given requires her to do extensive genealogical research to determine her father's identity. So the reader is introduced to many of Willie's ancestors throughout the book and she is related to some real characters. There are helpful family trees included as well to keep the reader from getting too confused as to who everyone is in the story.

This was a quick, interesting, and fun read and it is a highly recommended book with which to start your summer reading.

Forgotten Founding Fathers

The Bacon Library just added a new book to its collection titled Forgotten Founding Father: Noah Webster, by Joshua Kendall. It seems the famous compiler of the dictionary had some influence with George Washington and Benjamin Franklin.

In recent years, there have been similar books advocating on behalf of a favorite son, or rather, father. Here are four of those titles:

Roger Williams and the Creation of the American Soul, The Forgotten Founding Father: Noah Webster
George Mason, Forgotten Founder
Forgotten Founding Father: George Whitefield
John Winthrop: America’s Forgotten Founding Father

There is an old saying, Victory has a hundred fathers and defeat is an orphan. It seems that the ultimately successful American Revolution has 100 founding fathers, and more.

The pantheon, the upper echelon of founders, includes George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Alexander Hamilton. To some they seem like mythical gods, but instead of hurling lightning bolts they hand us ideas of liberty and precepts for putting the ideas into a working constitution.

There is a second level of greatness. Among these esteemed, if not as famous, are John Jay, Sam Adams, Thomas Paine, Patrick Henry, Gouverneur Morris and George Mason.

And there are still others, mostly the more influential signers of the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. These include John Hancock, Benjamin Rush, Robert Morris, Richard Henry Lee, James Wilson, Elbridge Gerry, Roger Sherman, Edmund Randolph, John Rutledge, both Charles Pinckneys, Rufus King, William Livingston, William Paterson and John Dickinson.

And, a few other notables can not be forgotten: John Marshall, James Monroe, Nathan Hale, Paul Revere, Ethan Allen, Francis Marion, Henry Knox, and Nathanael Greene.

And not to be xenophobic, let’s not forget Lafayette and Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben.

And then there is the matter of a couple of bad boys. Like baseball greats Ty Cobb and Pete Rose, their contribution is great, but their conduct left a dark mark on their record. Here we have Benedict Arnold and Aaron Burr.

Are founding mothers ignored? Mostly, yes. However, the library has a book titled Founding Mothers: the women who raised our nation, by Cokie Roberts. Here you will find not only Abigail Adams, Betsy Ross and Molly Pitcher, but many others.

Wyandotte's Clock Tower

Clock Tower

Just as every city benefits from a downtown district, every downtown district benefits from an identifiable landmark and center of activity. Traditionally, these landmarks have been a town square, gazebo, fountain, courthouse or clock tower.

Since the year 2000, Wyandotte’s chiming clock tower has stood tall in Millennium Plaza in the heart of the business district. With its simple lines, bold clock face and weathervane; it adds a distinguished presence on the Avenue.

In a curious way, it is a modern counterpoint to the totem pole two blocks to the south. Just as the Wyandot Indian totem pole reflects an older culture, the clock tower highlights something central to modern culture. In place of the turtle totem, we have a clock, bearing witness to our preoccupation with time.

But this utilitarian structure also displays a flair for fashion. Bright banners wrap around the tower appropriate for the season. The color scheme changes throughout the year: winter, blue; spring, green; summer, yellow; Art Fair, red; and autumn, orange.

It doesn’t necessarily take a 30 foot tall tower to achieve landmark status. Smaller, elegant, old style clocks mounted on posts located in Flat Rock, Taylor, Rockwood Lincoln Park and Allen Park serve as indicators that one is approaching a people friendly gathering spot.

The resurgent popularity of these vintage timepieces is a measure of how much we value continuity and community.

May Bacon Book Club

Bacon Book Club is meeting this Wednesday May 4th at 7pm to discuss Case Histories by Kate Atkinson.

I currently have about fifty pages left to read and I am anxious to find out how the book ends. The story is about private investigator Jackson Brodie and three old unsolved or unresolved police cases that he has been asked to look into.

In the first case history, a three year old girl vanishes from a tent in her backyard in the middle of the night never to be seen again. In the second, a lawyer's daughter is killed while working at his office for the summer. No one could remember anything about the man who killed her other than the fact that he was wearing a yellow golfing sweater. In the third case history, a newly married woman snaps and attacks her husband with an ax. She ends up killing him in front of their baby daughter.

The book is told from four different perspectives: Jackson's and one person from each of the three case histories. The unrelated characters begin to overlap with each other in the present due to their involvement with Jackson. So far, it has been an enjoyable read.

Local author Mike Vasich will be here this Saturday to discuss and sign copies of his recently published fantasy novel Loki which is based on Norse mythology. He will do a short reading and provide some background information on the mythology that forms the basis of the book.

Write Your Family Story

In keeping with the National Library Week theme for 2011, "Create your own story," the Bacon Library will present the program "Write your family story." Genealogists spend their lifetimes gathering information about their family history. They have file drawers filled with documents, charts and photographs. By taking the next step and turning the information into a narrative, they can bring the parts into a whole and give ancestors new life. This program, presented by librarian Wally Hayden, is designed for the person who has already done family history research and now wants to turn their research into a story. In honor of National Library Week, Bacon Library will be having a photographic scavenger hunt running from April 1-16, 2011. Stop by the library and view the ten photos in our display case. Entries with the most correct answers will be put into a drawing to win a $25 gift certificate to Sanders. Entries must be picked up and returned at the library during this time period to be eligible to win.

   This photo of the front staircase of the Bacon House appeared in a recent article by Kelly Christopher Luttrell in the online newspaper http://www.wyandotte.patch.com/. I feel fortunate to work daily in such beautiful surroundings, and I encourage all our visitors to take a moment or two during their next visit to Bacon Library to explore the historic Bacon Home. The home was donated to the Wyandotte Board of Education by Mary Ford Bacon for use as a public library in 1942, and housed the entire library collection until 1962 when a new addition was added to serve as the main library facililty.
    Many visitors fondly recall time spent in the window seats of the Billiard Room overlooking the backyard, which served as the children's reading room. That room still sees daily use as a quiet study room and also houses the Max Schwartz collection of materials on transportation and military history. Other materials to be found in the house are the magazines, both current and back issues and, on the second floor, the Local History rooms. Our local history collection encompasses a wide variety of unique materials: books, pamphlets, maps, photographs, yearbooks, scrapbooks, historical census information and a complete collection of the Wyandotte News-Herald on microfilm dating back to 1888.
   The house is open for self guided tours during regular library hours. Brochures outlining the history and use of rooms are available at the Information Desk and are also displayed in the first floor magazine room. Guided tours (which include access to the attic and the basement) are conducted the first Saturday of each month at 10:00am.

The Underground Railroad in Wyandotte

We have added a new book to the library's Local History Collection, The Underground Railroad in Michigan, by Carol Mull.

Before the Civil War, fugitive slaves fled to the North, and then to Canada. Sometimes, slave owners or their agents pursued them. The Underground Railroad was the name given to the network of people helping the slaves travel from one safe house to another along the perilous route north.

Until now, knowledge of Wyandotte’s own connection to the Underground Railroad was limited to the 1830s and 1840s, when Major John Biddle hired many escaped slaves to work on his farm. If bounty hunters closed in, the former slaves could escape to nearby Canada.

This book adds new and specific information on Underground Railroad activities in the village of Wyandotte.

In 1855, an Ypsilanti cigar maker and former slave named George McCoy regularly brought wagonloads of cigars to Wyandotte. His wagon had a false bottom holding fugitive slaves.

After arriving in Wyandotte, McCoy made contact with a local resident, an African-American known to us only as Mr. Bush. Mr. Bush guided the escapees to the Detroit River where a boat named The Pearl was waiting. When ready, The Pearl slipped away from the shore and headed for Canada and freedom.

Discovering a little new information about our community’s role in these historically important events is both exciting and sobering.

Land's End

Heading north on I-75, once the concrete maze of the metropolis has vanished in the rearview mirror, the tonier suburbs bypassed and the vast stretches of farms and forests slipped serenely by, the traveler arrives at a kind of journey’s end named Mackinaw City.

Easing off the interstate, glimpses of bright blue at the ends of the streets of the village create an exhilarating end-of-the-land feeling that marks this as a unique place.

Southeast Michigan has its own version of land’s end. It is a geographic oddity called The Lost Peninsula, and to reach this bit of Michigan by land, you must go to Ohio.

An agreement that ended the Toledo War in 1836 reset the southern boundary of Michigan and extended the state line into Lake Erie. The line dissected a finger of land that jutted from Toledo northward into Lake Erie. Only the very tip of the peninsula was north of the line and therefore belonged to Michigan.

On a recent trip to that area, Elvin Reed, a regular visitor to the Bacon Library, took this photograph of the state line marker. In the background, the entrance to the Lost Peninsula Marina is visible.

Aside from the sizable marina and a few homes, there is not much there. Unlike Mackinaw City, there is no mighty bridge to admire and no maze of quaint shops to wander through. However, in the summer there is a lot of boating activity.

A visit to this obscure destination provides a little adventure while allowing the intrepid traveler to be home in time for dinner.

March Bacon Book Club

The Bacon Book Club will be meeting this Wednesday March 2nd at 7pm to discuss About a Boy by Nick Hornby.

I had seen the movie version of About a Boy, starring Hugh Grant, before and really enjoyed it but I had never read the book that it was based on. I ended up really enjoying the book as well. Will Freeman goes through life pretty much doing nothing and without forming any deep attachments to other people. He lives off the royalties of a popular Christmas song that his father wrote decades ago and views relationships with other people as little more than a way to pass the time. He is single, has no close friends, and seems to have no family either. He ends up meeting a twelve year old boy Marcus and his mother by way of a single parents support group that Will joins after inventing an imaginary child. The book is alternately told from the points of view of Marcus and Will.

Will was a really unlikable character when this book started but Hornby did a good job of making the reader slowly begin to like him. When the book ends, Will hasn't completely lost all of his old ways but he seems like he is trying to change. Marcus's story is also interesting. He has moved to a new city with his single mother and is having a very hard time fitting in at his new school. On top of that, his mother suffers from depression and that takes a major toll on him as well. The ending of the book is different from the ending of the movie and I liked the book's ending a lot better. The movie ends up wrapping up all the different plot points and pairs everybody off. It is a typical happy movie ending. The book ends on a positive note but doesn't nicely wrap everything up and seems a lot more realistic and true to life than the movie ending.

Both the book and the movie are recommended and Bacon Library owns both.

What Would We Do Without Friends?

     The Friends of Bacon Library is a small but active group. Their sole purpose is to augment resources and services provided by the library, primarily through fundraising activities, but also by donating their time and talent. Their efforts have provided such items for the library as furniture for the youth area, patron counters at the entrances, wicker furniture for the front porch, informational card sleeves given out with new library cards, and much more. Additionally, they have sponsored numerous programs that have delighted audiences of all ages, including many of the Summer Reading Program events.
     The Friends run an on-going used book and media sale in the library's multi-purpose room. The sale is chock full of wonderful books, CDs, and movies available at reasonable prices, with new items being added frequently. They sponsor the "Take Me Home" project which places quality books in waiting rooms around town. They plant and maintain the lovely flower boxes that enhance the front porch of the Bacon House each summer. They host successful fundraising events such as Mystery Nights and, this past fall, a Spell Bowl where teams competed against one another for prizes and bragging rights as spellers extraordinaire. This event was so much fun the plan is to make it an annual event, so start recruiting your smartest friends and family members for a team now!
     The Friends of Bacon Library meet the fourth Monday of most months and always welcome new faces. If you can't commit to attending a meeting, please consider joining the Friends group with an annual membership fee of as little as $10.00. Membership brochures are available at the library.
     We applaud the service and commitment that the Friends of Bacon Library exhibit. Many, many thanks to past, current and future members of this indispensable organization.

Children's DVD Donations Needed

Just like everyone else today, our budget has had to be cut. We are very lucky to have a wonderful and generous public who donates regularly. I'm calling on you once again. The library would really love to expand our children's DVD selection, but unfortunately, the funds just aren't there to do more than the current children's movie releases. If you have any PBS kids, Disney Playhouse, Nick Jr DVD titles your kids have outgrown, please think about donating to us. Also any Disney movies. We have most on VHS, but unfortunately, this is rather outdated for most people.

Historic Wyandotte Photographs

A lifetime of 75 years can be divided into a cascading sequence of 2.3 billion seconds. A Photograph can be thought of as one of those moments plucked from the multitude to be experienced once again even after the people and places pictured have vanished.

People long departed are captured in mid-stride or mid-sentence. Places long demolished are seen thriving in their heyday.

Take for example, this photograph from one hundred years ago. Though many of the 13 persons pictured were likely strangers to one another, they share forever a single reconstructed moment.

The image shows the west side of Biddle Avenue in Wyandotte, Michigan, between Eureka Avenue and Sycamore Street. In 2011, this is a grassy area that fronts the Chase Bank building. But, as seen from about 1910, things were much different.

Storefronts crowd the sidewalk and several pedestrians amble along, including a group of four children on the left. On the street a horse and wagon sit at the far right and streetcar tracks are visible.

The nine shops from left to right are: Little Dry Goods, Gettleman's 5 & 10 Bazaar, Genthe Grocery, H. Rosenthal Dry Goods, Gartner Shoes, Loeffler Clothing, Gartner Hardware, Kaul's Dry Goods and Thon Undertakers.

A hundred years later, Thon's still operates a funeral home on Biddle Avenue a few blocks north of this location.

In 1981, the Wyandotte Savings Bank built the office building that now occupies this site.

February Bacon Book Club

The first BBC meeting of 2011 will be next Wednesday Feb 2 at 7pm. We will be discussing The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe. The book is about a woman named Connie Goodwin who is working on her doctoral dissertation and is asked by her mother to go to Marblehead, Massachusetts and get her grandma's house, which has been abandoned for years, ready to sell. While at the house, she comes across an old bible and key that contains a scroll with the name Deliverance Dane on it. She begins to research her family's history and finds that they have a connection to the Salem Witch Trials.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. Connie's story is set in 1991 and the book is mostly about her and the discoveries that she makes about her family, but there are also interlude chapters told from the perspectives of her female ancestors. I found these chapters to be the most interesting because they discuss what life was like for an accused woman during the witch trials and the impact that it had on a family for many years to come. Connie would find out a small amount of information about one of these woman in the present and then the book would flash back to the past and fill in some of the gaps.

The one thing I did not enjoy about this book though, was that Connie dealt with a number of librarians in her quest to find out more information about her family. They were largely portrayed in a very stereotypical manner and frequently were rude, acting like it was a major inconvenience to help her find anything. Not a great representation of my profession.

A book about the ways that people interact with technology. The author believes that the human brain can't distinguish between interacting with people and interacting with devices. The first paragraph of the summary on the book jacket made me want to read this book. It says:

The driver was insistent: "A woman should not be giving directions." Despite the customer service rep's reassurance that the navigation system in his car wasn't actually a woman- just a computer with a female voice- the driver (and many others like him) refused to listen.

The topic of the book may not initially sound that exciting but it looks like the author makes it interesting.

When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead

As a mother of daughters, one who is approaching the tween times quickly, I know how hard it is to get that quality time. The curling up and playing quietly together days are far and few in between. This is why the Mother/Daughter Book club is such a fantastic idea. It gives girls in their tween and teen times, a shared interest with their mothers or other important woman in thir lives. We hope that if you have daughters 10 & up, you will join us to discuss When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead.

I just finished this wonderful Newberry Award winning book, and I loved it! I think it is a great shared book for mothers and daughters, because it takes place in the 1970's (which most of us mothers can identify with), and it incorporates many themes that young girls are facing. It also has a great twist. Make sure you explain what $10,000 Pyramid game show is! I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did, and I can't wait to discuss it.
